While it’s always a real thrill to have a story included in an anthology, the release of Best of Friday Flash Volume One is a an absolute pleasure. The #fridayflash movement on Twitter – the brainchild of JM Strother – was where I got my start in writing. I had recently signed up to Twitter (under the moniker Cascade Lily – after my first blog Cascade) and was trying to get my head around what it was all about and why I should bother. I happened across the #fridayflash hashtag and decided to give it a bash; a one thousand word story – how hard could that be? Well I slaved over that first story then launched it into cyberspace. The feedback was humbling, encouraging and positive! So I did it again and again every week for about six months straight. It was a great way to get a feel for how I would like to write, as well as acting as a bit of a playground, where I could try on new writing styles and subject matter for size and see how I liked it without committing to a significant piece of work. I also met some fabulous writers – all around the world – many of whom also have a story within the anthology.
While I’m now only an occasional participant in #fridayflash, I remain in contact with quite a few of the writers. It has also led to other creative outlets for my writing, including Chinese Whisperings – editor Jodi Cleghorn left the very first comment on that first story of mine. It’s amazing what can come from a very small idea and a whole bunch of enthusiasm.
A big shout-out to Jon for conceiving so many great ideas, to Jodi for being the Australian content editor, who helped strengthen ‘Dental Check’ prior to publication, and to my fellow authors. You are a wonderful, crazy, supportive bunch!
